Dear Prospective Georgia Foreign Language Teacher:

The State of Georgia issues two types of teaching credentials in the foreign language fields: a certificate; and, a permit. Certificates are generally issued based on completion of state-approved language programs, often associated with a college degree in the language. Teaching permits, a specific "type" of Georgia certificate issued only at the request of an employing school system, are available based on ACTFL assessments in the foreign languages identified below:

Arabic Japanese
Chinese (Mandarin) Korean
French Portuguese
German Russian
Hebrew Spanish
Italian Swahili

One of the eligibility requirements for the Georgia Foreign Language Permit (in addition to a job offer from a Georgia school system), is the successful completion of the ACTFL proficiency test(s). Both the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) are required. Note, however, that at this time the WPT is not yet available for the permit languages of Hebrew and Swahili. Until those WPTs are finalized, only the OPI is necessary for those two language permit assessments. All of the Writing Proficiency Tests required by Georgia use a test-booklet administration, with the WPT in French, Spanish and German also being available online through the internet.

For additional information on Foreign Language Permit requirements, visit the Georgia Professional Standards Commission website at http://www.gapsc.com or contact a certification information specialist at (404) 232-2500 then, at the prompt, press 2, then 1. Because a job offer from a Georgia school system is a pre-requisite, additional information on permits and ACTFL test proctors is available from the school system personnel office.

For information about ACTFL proficiency assessments, the application process, testing procedures and scoring, please read the Georgia Teacher ACTFL Proficiency Assessments Brochure available through the links below. After reading through the brochure, you may download the appropriate forms and/or apply online.
