Dear Prospective North Carolina Foreign Language Teacher:
To facilitate the licensing of teachers for world languages, the North Carolina State Board of Education has approved the use of ACTFL language proficiency assessments to qualify for a lateral entry license or to add a language area to a clear license in another teaching area. To be eligible for a lateral entry license, an individual must also have at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, meet specified grade point average requirements, and be employed by a North Carolina school system.
North Carolina State Board of Education policy specifies that to be licensed based on ACTFL testing, an individual must earn a rating of at least "Intermediate High" on the oral proficiency assessment (OPI) and, if available through ACTFL, the written proficiency assessment (WPT).
For additional information on North Carolina licensure requirements, please visit the website www.teach4nc.org or call the Licensure Section at 919-807-3310.
For information about ACTFL proficiency assessments, the application process, testing procedures and scoring, please read the North Carolina Teacher ACTFL Proficiency Assessments Brochure available through the links below. After reading through the brochure, you may download the appropriate forms and/or apply online.
