ACTFL language tests measure language proficiency, which means they determine a candidate's ability to use the language effectively and appropriately in real-life situations. They are not concerned with, nor do they address, when, where, why or the way in which a candidate has acquired his/her language. ACTFL tests are not achievement tests - they do not assess a speaker's acquisition of specific aspects of a language, nor are they dependent on a specific curriculum. ACTFL assessments will tell you what a person can do with the language, detailing the level at which they can sustain successful communication in all forms, and the clear upper limits of their ability. In a business context, ACTFL assessments are appropriate for employment selection, placement into training programs, demonstration of linguistic progress, and evidence of training effectiveness.
