Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)
The flagship of ACTFL assessments is the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The ACTFL OPI is an internationally recognized, valid and reliable assessment of speaking proficiency. The OPI resembles a conversation between two people but in fact follows a standard structure and protocol. The OPI is a live, 20-30 minute telephonic interview between an ACTFL Certified Tester and a candidate that adapts to the interests, experience and level of the candidate.
The ACTFL OPI is appropriate for a variety of purposes: entrance and exit exams, placement, college credit, program evaluation and performance, teacher credentialing and employment selection. The ACTFL OPI was favorably reviewed and Official OPI ratings are recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education.
Oral Proficiency Interview - Computer (OPIc)
The ACTFL OPIc is an on-demand, internet or phone-delivered proficiency test. An avatar provides a customized series of prompts based on the interests and experience of the test-taker as elicited during a survey phase at the beginning of the test. The test is recorded and assessed by trained, certified raters, and a score assigned against either the ACTFL or the ILR scale. Because the test can be taken at the candidate’s convenience, it is easy to schedule and cost-effective. The OPIc takes 20-40 minutes to complete.
Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)
The Writing Proficiency Test is delivered via the web, and consists of a number of prompts, which are customized to reflect the interests and experience of the test-taker. The candidate is presented with four to five prompts for written responses dealing with practical, social and professional topics that are familiar to the individual and of general and/or cultural relevance, encountered in both formal and informal contexts. The responses are assessed by certified ACTFL raters, and results provided against the ACTFL scale. The test takes 60-80 minutes, depending on the range of proficiency being assessed.
Listening Tests for Professionals (LTP)
The Listening test assesses the ability to understand the spoken word in all its forms through an internet delivered test format. The candidate must listen to a number of passages related to a range of real-life topics and review associated questions, selecting the most appropriate answer. It is auto-graded, with results provided instantaneously on the ACTFL scale. The standard form of the test takes 50 minutes to complete.
Reading Proficiency Test (RPT)
The reading assessment is delivered over the web, and requires that the candidate read a number of passages and review associated questions, selecting the most appropriate answers. Their choices are auto-graded, with results made available almost instantaneously, referencing the ACTFL proficiency scale. The standard form of the test takes 50 minutes to complete.
