The Listening Test for Professionals® (LTP) is a standardized, computer-delivered test for the global assessment of listening ability in a language. LTPs measure how well a person understands spoken discourse as described in the ACTFL or ILR rating scales. The listening passages and multiple choice questions and answers are presented in the target language.
Designed by testing experts, LTPs are carefully constructed assessments which evaluate Novice to Superior levels of listening ability. Most commonly, the test is administered to assess a specific range of proficiency from Novice Low to Intermediate Mid; Intermediate Mid to Advanced Mid, and Advanced Low to Superior, although other versions are available as illustrated below:
This approach ensures that the test is candidate-friendly, focused and economical as far as time and effort.
|Test Length||50 minutes for a two level test (A, B & C)
75 minutes for a three level test (D & E)
120 minutes for the full range test (F)
|Test Format||Five recordings at each level with three multiple choice questions per text|
|Test Content||Informal and formal exchanges on general, social, academic and professional topics, such as technical reports, news broadcasts and excerpts from editorials|
|Rating||An ACTFL or ILR rating is assigned based on the range of the test taken.|
|Languages||English and Spanish. French, German, Portuguese and Russian to be introduced in 2012.|
How do I request an LTP?
To schedule an LTP, your organization must set up a free account with Language Testing International – we will collect some basic administrative information and then provide access to a secure web-based scheduling utility. Using this utility, the organization can request assessments, track those requests, confirm appointments and see results. The LTP is not available to Academic Institutions.
Because the LTP is computer-based, organizations can arrange for candidates to take the assessment in a proctored setting at any time. All that is needed is a computer with headphones meeting the minimum specifications, detailed here, in an appropriate test environment.
Results of assessments are posted and stored on the client utility website, allowing organizations to track their testing activity easily in a single location.
How is the Listening Test proctored?
LPTs must be proctored by an authorized, responsible individual, ideally a member of the HR department of the organization requesting the assessment. This individual, nominated by the organizing agency, will sign a form and provide it to LTI in advance of the assessment, undertaking to guarantee the identity of the candidate and the conditions under which the test is taken.
