AAPPL – K-12 Testing

The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is unlike any other assessment. The AAPPL addresses the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and uses today's communication media in which test takers perform tasks such as participating in a virtual video chat, creating wikis, e-mailing, and using apps to demonstrate language ability.

As schools around the country increase their language testing and certification, it is our pleasure to introduce you to AAPPL, the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages test. The AAPPL provides a true measure of proficiency in students across all language skills, including interpersonal speaking. Learn more about the reasons why language educators have committed to the AAPPL.

Language and Modes of Communication

The AAPPL assesses the following modes of communication:

  • Interpersonal Listening/Speaking
  • Presentational Writing
  • Interpretive Reading and Listening

Languages

AAPPL Forms A and B are available in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

ACTFL is committed to making the AAPPL test experience available to as many students as possible. To request development for AAPPL in a language not currently offered, please complete this form. If the request can be accommodated, such development would be done in cooperation with the requestors.

AAPPL Form E

ACTFL and LTI are pleased to continue to offer Form E of the AAPPL as a testing option for learners of Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, and Spanish in 3rd and 4th grades. Form E features all new age-appropriate content and assesses Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS), allowing young learners' speaking and listening proficiency to be assessed independently of reading, writing, or technical skills.

AAPPL Form E targets the Novice to Intermediate levels of proficiency as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and ratings are assigned according to the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.

AAPPL Form E is an assessment of standards-based tasks for the Interpersonal Listening/Speaking mode of communication, as defined by the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. In keeping with the ACTFL motto, "practice makes proficient," the newly released topics allow teachers to create opportunities for students to practice "tasks within familiar contexts" (ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners, 2012, p. 5) for the Interpersonal Listening and Speaking mode.

A combination of performance and proficiency assessment practices is ideal for language learners who will transition from using the language in planned, rehearsed classroom settings (performance) to using it spontaneously in completely novel real-world settings (proficiency); the AAPPL combines these two approaches to focus attention on both what students have learned to do and what they can do in new settings.
