The ACTFL RPT is a standardized test for the global assessment of reading ability in a language. RPTs measure how well a person how well a person spontaneously reads a language when presented with texts and tasks as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012 – Reading, without access to dictionaries or grammar references.
The ACTFL RPT is a carefully constructed assessment which evaluates Novice to Superior levels of reading ability. It is delivered by computer via the Internet. The test can assess a specific range of proficiency (e.g., Novice Low to Intermediate Mid; Intermediate Mid to Advanced Mid; and Advanced Low to Superior). Other versions are available as illustrated in the grid below. These options ensure that the test administered targets the range of the candidate’s reading ability and is economical, in terms of time and effort. |Test Length||50 minutes for a two level test (A, B & C)
75 minutes for a three level test (D & E)
120 minutes for the full range test (F)
|Test Age Range||12 – Adult. Younger candidates may be able to take the test. It depends on their language experience and training (i.e. attendance in an elementary, dual-immersion program, etc.).|
|Test Format||The RPT consists of recorded passages at specific levels of proficiency. Each passage has three questions; each question has four multiple-choice answers of which only one is correct. Questions and multiple-choice answers at the Intermediate level and below are in English; questions and multiple-choice answers at the Advanced and Superior levels are in the target language.|
|Test Content||There is a range of informal and formal speech on general, social, and academic topics, such as daily interactions, reports, discussions and broadcasts.|
|Rating||An ACTFL rating is assigned based on the number of correct responses and the version of the test administered. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and ILR ratings are also available when requested before the test administration.|
|Languages||The RPT is currently available in: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.|
How do I request a Reading Test?
To schedule a Reading Test, your organization must set up a free account with Language Testing International – we will collect some basic administrative information and then provide access to a secure web-based scheduling utility. Using this utility, the organization can request assessments, track those requests, confirm appointments and see results.
Because the RPT is computer-based, organizations can arrange for candidates to take the assessment in a proctored setting at any time. All that is needed is a computer meeting the minimum specifications, detailed here, in an appropriate test environment.
Results of assessments are also posted and stored on the client utility website, allowing organizations to track their testing activity easily in a single location.
How is the Reading Test proctored?
RPTs must be proctored by am authorized, responsible individual, ideally a member of the HR department of the organization requesting the assessment. This individual, nominated by the organizing agency, will sign a form and provide it to LTI in advance of the assessment, undertaking to guarantee the identity of the candidate and the conditions under which the test is taken.
