English is the company\u2019s common language, \u201cbut our clients often want people that can speak their local language,\u201d Julia says.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Davies, employer relations manager at London\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessbecause.com\/imperial-college-business-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperial College Business School<\/a>, says there is growing demand for multilingual European language speakers at companies including BP,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessbecause.com\/companies\/general-electric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GE<\/a>, Johnson &amp; Johnson, and GSK, which have operations in emerging markets.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAndr\u00e9 Alcalde, an executive at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lojasrenner.com.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lojas Renner<\/a>, Brazil\u2019s largest fast-fashion retailer, speaks English, Spanish, French and Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a business world that is more internationally-connected,\u201d says the HULT MBA student, \u201cit is mandatory when building an executive career to be able to deal with different cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two-thirds of businesses in the UK want to recruit staff with foreign language skills. A survey by the business lobby group the CBI and education company Pearson found European languages are the most sought after: French (50%); German (49%); and Spanish (44%). Not speaking multiple languages could be a barrier to promotion, according to the British Academy\u2019s Born Global research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe normally say English is a given, and another international language is required to be considered for international roles,\u201d says Wendy Sleat, executive recruitment manager at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/admiraljobs.co.uk\/working-here\/mbas-at-admiral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Admiral<\/a>, the FTSE 100 insurance group.<\/p>\n<p>She adds: \u201cWe\u2019re an international company so we need people who can work overseas and that people working at multinational US companies can add value and distinguish themselves by being multilingual \u2014 \u201cpossibly increasing their chances for global positions or leadership roles\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/charts.datawrapper.de\/nm4CM\/index.html\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A survey of 419 US employers by the University of Phoenix Research Institute found that 70% expect Spanish language skills to be in high demand over the next decade; 42% cited Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to speak Mandarin Chinese is a clear advantage at CEIBS in Shanghai, says Yvonne Li, director of MBA career services.<\/p>\n<p>She says: \u201cWith the growing integration of the global economy, employers \u2014 especially those with reach \u2014 need talented individuals who can work in a multicultural environment and lead multicultural teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enter language testing.<\/p>\n<p>More and more testing a candidates language skills and ability is becoming a trend for companies who require not only employees who speak a language but employees who needs to speak at a certain level &#8211; not to mention red and write in that other language.<\/p>\n<p>The message emanating from global employers and business schools \u2014 is that multilingualism may give you an edge in your ascent to the executive suite.<\/p>\n<p>Source: Business Because\/Seb Murray<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s job market is desperate for graduates\u00a0who speak\u00a0multiple languages. \u201cLanguages are always good for us,\u201d says Julia McDonald, head of talent acquisition for EMEA at\u00a0Infosys.
