They are expected to make students future-ready, align learning to real-world demands, and ensure every graduating student is prepared for what comes next.

In this work of future-proofing education, where does language fit?

In fact, language education is one of the most powerful, albeit the most underestimated, tool to make learners college and career ready.

Current Reality: A Serious Disconnect

Across industries, employers are signaling the same message: multilingual employees are in demand. Healthcare, technology, education, hospitality, law enforcement, government… nearly every sector of the economy is seeking professionals that can communicate across languages and cultures.

Is our language education preparing students to fill the pipeline?

While this demand is growing, the perceived importance of language education is diminishing. Enrollment is declining, funding is shrinking, and programs are treated as electives rather than essentials.

This disconnect presents both a challenge and an opportunity for educational leaders.

No More “Nice to Have”

For too long, language education has been framed primarily as an academic pursuit: an academic enrichment or graduation requirement. While, of course, its academic value remains important, this narrow framing limits student motivation, program sustainability, and long-term relevance. It doesn’t serve our students well.

Language proficiency is a college and career readiness skill. Multilingual individuals:

Are more competitive in the job market.

Have better problem solving and multitasking skills.

Earn more on average than their monolingual counterparts.

In other words, language is an economic asset. Leaders who recognize this are not just protecting language programs; they are futureproofing them.

Leadership Means Redefining Purpose

The most effective leaders understand that the most successful and sustainable programs are built on a clear purpose. When students understand why they are learning something, engagement increases, programs thrive, and outcomes improve.

Reframing language learning around purpose and outcomes transforms it into a strategic investment. It also sends a powerful message to students, parents, and communities that the district is serious about preparing students for a global, interconnected world.

Read more: Leveraging Language, Connecting Students to Employment Opportunities

From Participation to Proof

Purpose alone, however, isn’t enough. In today’s data- and accountability-driven world, proof matters. The Seal of Biliteracy is an important milestone and a powerful symbol. But what truly gives it value is what stands behind it: the assessment.

Not all language assessments are created equal.

Only ACTFL assessments result in ACTFL score and certificates, powerful credentials recognized by industry, higher education, and government as a valid measure of real-world language ability.

When districts anchor language programs in valid and reliable assessments, they give students ACTFL credentials. And they give themselves outcomes that stand up to scrutiny.

Turning Data into Leadership Decisions

Assessments are the beginning of the story. Data-rich reporting and post-testing insights allow leaders to engage in continuous improvement. Strong reporting helps:

Evaluate program effectiveness.

Inform instructional decisions.

Support access.

Advocate for resources with confidence.

Used strategically, assessment data becomes a powerful leadership tool.

Be the District Others Look to Follow

As a leader, you have a unique opportunity right now.

In a landscape where language programs are at risk, your bold leadership can set a different example, one rooted in purpose, credibility, and value. Elevating language as a college and career readiness asset positions you as an innovator and a model for others to follow.

This is not about adding another initiative; it’s about aligning existing programs to outcomes that matter. The future will reward districts that focus on career-connected learning to prepare students to compete and succeed.

Language education belongs in the future.
