Korean Language Proficiency Tests

Korean Language Proficiency Tests

Whether you're an individual or a teacher, count on Language Testing International® (LTI) for Korean proficiency tests online from any location. LTI is the exclusive licensee of ACTFL® assessments, which measure a person's ability to use language regardless of how it was acquired.

ACTFL proficiency test prompts are based on pre-assessment surveys completed by test-takers. You can use the scores to place students in the appropriate level of language classes, work toward a Korean language certification, or provide proof of skills for work.

ACTFL Korean Proficiency Assessments

LTI provides ACTFL assessments to suit various learning journeys and goals. The assessments provide a Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Superior rating and further divide the first three levels into Low, Mid, and High sublevels.

Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

Available in Korean, ACTFL's WPT is an 80- to 90-minute standardized assessment of functional writing abilities. From short messages to paragraph essays, test-takers receive four writing prompts designed to elicit responses for tasks in practical and professional scenarios. ACTFL-Certified Raters evaluate the responses to provide ACTFL proficiency level scores.

Listening Proficiency Test (LPT)

ACTFL's LPT is an online, 50- to 125-minute proctored assessment that measures a person's ability to understand spoken languages across proficiency levels. Offered in Korean, the test evaluates general listening comprehension rather than a specific curriculum. Test-takers listen to passages of varying complexity and answer multiple-choice questions.

Reading Proficiency Test (RPT)

ACTFL has a 50- to 125-minute RPT that measures a person's ability to understand written Korean at different levels. This online, computer-based assessment features real-world texts, including emails, articles, and reports. Test-takers must answer multiple-choice questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the reading material.

Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)

Certified Testers conduct ACTFL OPIs to assess a person's language speaking ability through phone conversations. Available in Korean, the standardized test typically lasts around 15 to 30 minutes. Test-takers can expect a warmup followed by proficiency level checks and questions that elicit ratable speech samples.

Oral Proficiency Interview — Computer (OPIc)

Similar to ACTFL's OPI, the OPIc evaluates a person's language speaking ability and is available in Korean. A computer program uses an individual's background survey to customize assessments with prerecorded questions. The semi-direct, internet-based assessment requires the test taker to answer with spontaneous and unrehearsed speech on various topics.

Frameworks for Korean Language Level Tests

Following the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages scale, LTI can administer and evaluate Korean language placement tests. The popular language proficiency framework in Europe evaluates language ability in terms of language activities, their domains, and their competencies.

The test assesses four language activities — reception, production, interaction, and mediation. Those real-world activities correspond with listening and reading, speaking and writing, and translating and interpreting.

Additionally, LTI can administer and evaluate ACTFL assessments with an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) framework. From NASA to the United States Department of Defense, many U.S. agencies use the ILR framework to evaluate their employees' language proficiency on a scale of zero to five.
