Windows ALT Codes

Typing Accents and Symbols

When assessing Presentational Writing in AAPPL, all Romanized alphabet languages (English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish), can use the on-screen special character palette to insert accents and symbols. Additionally, on Windows-based computers, combinations of the ALT key plus a numeric code can be used to type non-English characters (accented letters, diacritical marks, or punctuation symbols). The ALT codes can be used for the French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish languages only. For Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Thai languages, the language-specific keyboard must be set up.

To insert an Alt Key character, hold down the "Alt" key while typing (using the numbers keypad to the right of the keyboard) the four numbers in the "Alt Code" column of the chart then release the "Alt" key. If you don't have a numbers keypad, hold down the "Fn" and "Alt" keys while typing the four numbers on the beveled front of the keys. The number "1" is on the "J" key on the keyboard.
