The right language proficiency scores can assist with education, certification, and workplace-related goals.

Chinese Proficiency Tests We Offer

Whether you're an individual or an organization, LTI professionals can help you choose Chinese proficiency tests that suit your unique requirements. ACTFL tests measure a person's language proficiency with skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessments are based on a pre-assessment survey that the test-taker completes.

Once the test is complete, evaluators provide Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Superior scores. The Low, Mid, and High sublevels offer detailed information about the test-taker's comprehension and performance. Experts at LTI can answer questions, provide helpful resources, and offer guidance to help you understand how the scoring works.

Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) Test

ACTFL's OPI in Chinese consists of a live, 15- to 30-minute phone conversation. An ACTFL-Certified Tester assesses the person's ability to speak Chinese with spontaneous, unrehearsed language in real-world scenarios. The test includes a warmup and questions to evaluate a language user's skills.

Oral Proficiency Interview-Computer (OPIc) Test

Offered in Chinese, ACTFL's OPIc features a 20 to 40-minute internet-delivered test to assess a person's spoken language abilities. A computerized program uses a virtual avatar to simulate a live conversation. ACTFL-Certified Raters evaluate recorded speech samples to determine a proficiency rating.

Listening Proficiency Test (LPT)

Available in Chinese, ACTFL's LPT is an online exam that measures a person's ability to understand spoken language in real-world situations. Test-takers answer multiple-choice questions about the main ideas or details discussed in about 10 to 25 short audio clips. The test typically lasts between 50 to 125 minutes.

Reading Proficiency Test (RPT)

ACTFL's RPT in Chinese assesses a person's ability to understand various texts, from simple notes to complex articles. The web-based test consists of 10 to 25 different texts, each accompanied by multiple-choice questions that assess reading comprehension. The assessment length can vary from 50 to 125 minutes.

Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

Offered in Chinese, ACTFL's WPT is a web-based assessment that measures a person's writing abilities. The standardized test features four prompts that cover personal, social, and professional topics. Test-takers will have approximately 80 minutes to write descriptive, narrative, or persuasive responses.

Frameworks for Chinese Language Level Tests

LTI administers and evaluates ACTFL tests with frameworks to suit your geographical requirements. Established by the Council of Europe, the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) uses an action-oriented approach to determine how a person applies their language skills in real-life situations.

The framework emphasizes activities such as language reception, production, interaction, and mediation in various environments. Test-takers will receive one of six language proficiency scores for Chinese assessments— A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2. The levels range from basic to advanced, and the numbers indicate a learner's language capabilities.

The Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) is an alternative to the ACTFL language proficiency scale. Many United States federal government agencies use ILR when establishing certification for Chinese and other languages.

The ILR scale is comprised of numerical values from zero to five. The higher the number, the greater the language proficiency — a level five typically indicates native or bilingual proficiency. You can review detailed descriptions to understand the scoring framework for each test.
