Certification Scales That Match Your Needs

The final rating is a powerful and reliable statement about your functional language abilities. ACTFL test results are evaluated by certified ACTFL-Raters who determine the highest major level at which a candidate can consistently and successfully perform.

German language level test results and other ACTFL language certifications can be rated with:

  • ACTFL Proficiency Scale: This scale provides a holistic description of your real-world functional ability with four major levels: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior. The first three levels are further divided into Low, Mid, and High sublevels for increased specificity of proficiency within the major level.
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): This scale measures the language activity types of interaction, reception, mediation, and production. It has six levels, grouped into the categories Basic, Independent, and Proficient.
  • Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR): This scale follows U.S. government's standards for language proficiency, assessing practical professional communication skills. Results are rated on a scale of 0 to 5, with “+” levels for accuracy.

ACTFL German Language Proficiency Tests Available

ACTFL measures the holistic use of effective and appropriate language in real-world situations. This universal standard is applied across more than 120 languages in over 60 countries, resulting in unbiased, consistent, and comparable results. Assessments are conducted and reviewed by trained and certified professionals and tailored to each candidate's interests, experience, and proficiency level.

ACTFL assessments, including German proficiency tests, are available for the four core communication skills:

Speaking

Speaking assessments are available in two modalities, the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Oral Proficiency Interview — Computer (OPIc)

The OPI test is a live telephone conversation between the candidate and a certified Tester that lasts 15 to 30 minutes.

The OPIc is an on-demand, internet-delivered test conducted with a virtual avatar interviewer, lasting 20 to 40 minutes. The first phase includes a background survey and a self-assessment, followed by a series of tailored prompts from the avatar. Responses are recorded and later assessed by certified ACTFL Raters.

Writing

The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is an online test that lasts between 20 and 80 minutes. Some versions use a Background Survey and Self-Assessment for customization. Candidates work with four to five prompts covering practical, social, and professional topics presented in English. Open-ended responses are provided in the target language and submitted for evaluation.

Listening

The Listening Proficiency Test (LPT) is an online assessment that takes 50 to 125 minutes to complete. The test covers a span of formal and informal topics, including daily interactions, discussions, and broadcasts. Candidates must listen to various spoken passages once and answer three multiple-choice questions, measuring their capacity to understand spoken language without asking for clarification.

Reading

The Reading Proficiency Test (RPT) is an online machine-scored test that lasts between 50 and 125 minutes. It presents several passages on various social, academic, and professional topics, followed by three multiple-choice questions. It measures the global reading ability and comprehension of authentic texts and provides fast report results.
