Results Reported to Global Standards

  • ACTFL Proficiency Scale: This scale provides a holistic description of your real-world functional ability with four major levels: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior. The first three levels are further divided into Low, Mid, and High sublevels for increased specificty of proficiency within the major level.
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): This international standard defines six language proficiency levels, grouped into three user categories: Basic (A1-A2), Independent (B1-B2), and Proficient (C1-C2).
  • Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR): This is the U.S. government's standard for measuring language proficiency, rating practical communication skills for work on a scale of 0 to 5, with “+” levels indicating proficiency between base levels.

Find the Right Japanese Proficiency Test

LTI is the exclusive licensee of ACTFL and offers a range of tests for Japanese language proficiency. These tests are the industry standard for verifying the ability to communicate effectively in real-world language situations. They measure your ability to use the language effectively and appropriately, demonstrating accuracy, fluency, and cultural understanding in various contexts.

Speaking

The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is a 15- to 30-minute live interview that simulates a natural conversation the test-taker might encounter in real life, tailored to the candidate's interests, experience, and proficiency level. It takes place over the telephone and is conducted by an ACTFL-Certified Tester who evaluates the speaker's full oral language potential.

Another speaking proficiency test available is the Oral Proficiency Interview — Computer (OPIc). This assessment is an on-demand, 20- to 40-minute oral proficiency interview conducted over the internet with LTI's remote proctoring providers

Many versions begin with a survey that helps shape the questions to the test-taker's level and interests. After this, an avatar asks a series of customized prompts that are recorded for later evaluation by an ACTFL-Certified Rater.

Writing

The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is an online test that takes from 20 to 80 minutes to complete, depending on the range of proficiency of the test-taker and the version of the test. It begins with pre-test survey questions, used to create tailored writing prompts on both informal and formal contexts. The test-taker produces written responses to each prompt that a Certified ACTFL Rater assesses against the desired scale.

Listening

The ACTFL Listening Proficiency Test (LPT) is an internet-delivered listening test with a duration ranging from 50 to 135 minutes. The test-taker listens to several spoken-word passages covering real-life topics and answers multiple-choice questions. This test is assessed automatically based on either the ILR, CEFR, or ACTFL scale.

Reading

The Reading Proficiency Test (RPT) is an online reading comprehension test that lasts between 50 and 125 minutes. The test consists of different formal and informal reading passages on various topics, followed by three multiple-choice questions. It is machine-scored, based on the desired scale, and test-takers receive nearly instantaneous results.
