What is the ACTFL Proficiency Placement Test (APPT)?

For institutions of higher education in need of a low-cost, low-stakes assessment, the ACTFL Proficiency Placement Test (APPT) is a computer adaptive, criterion-referenced test of reading and listening proficiency. The APPT is inexpensive and takes a total of 60 minutes or less to administer both sections. Results are aligned with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines- Reading/Listening for Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced language abilities. Currently, the APPT is available in French and Spanish.

What is the format of the APPT?

The test consists of two sections, reading and listening, which assess the interpretive mode of communication, as described in the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Each section consists of test items across a range of proficiency levels to assess language proficiency between Novice Low and Advanced Low. Each item consists of either a genuine reading text or audio passage and one multiple-choice question with one correct answer associated with the text or passage.

The APPT can last up to 60 minutes. The test is timed, but instead of a time limit for the entire test, there is a time limit for each test item. Test items targeted at the Intermediate and Advanced levels have a time limit of 75 and 120 seconds, respectively. The test is computer-adaptive, and each communication skill (reading and listening) presents between 10-25 items depending on the ability of the test taker.

What are the topics in the APPT?

Based on its proficiency-based framework, the APPT is not focused on any particular curriculum or language program. The APPT will assess a broad range of topics appropriate for adults. Genuine texts and passages are presented from any source including everyday life, business and economics, politics and current events, education, science and technology, education, in addition to arts and entertainment, etc.

Is there a demo or practice test for the APPT?

Yes. Click here to access the practice/demo test.

    How is the APPT rated?

The APPT is computer-adaptive and machine scored, with each multiple-choice item scored as either correct or incorrect. Once enough information has been gathered to assign a floor rating (the level at which the test taker has demonstrated sustained performance) and a ceiling rating (the level at which the examinee has demonstrated patterns of breakdown), the test will end. Test takers receive a separate rating for reading and listening. Ratings are aligned with the ACTFL Rating Scale, and range from Novice Low to Advanced Low.

How do I request an APPT?

Organizations wanting to schedule the APPT for candidates must set up a free account with Language Testing International (LTI). LTI will collect some basic administrative information and then provide access to a secure, web-based client utility for scheduling. The test must be administered on a computer or tablet that meets the minimum technical specifications, detailed here. Results of assessments are posted and stored on the client utility website, allowing organizations to track their testing activity easily in a single location.

Once your free Language Testing International (LTI) Client Site is set up, it is possible to have bulk test request uploading enabled for clients submitting requests for multiple candidates at the same time. Please review this document for details, and email support@languagetesting.com to have this option enabled for your account.

    Is the APPT proctored?

The APPT is NOT proctored, and the results should only be used for low-stakes purposes such as placement. However, test takers will be asked to adhere to an honor code that appears when they log into the test and not use any human support or language resource materials (paper, electronic or otherwise) during the test, and not copy, record, or share any test content in any way.

What is the cost of the APPT?

There are no annual fees, no set-up charges, and no minimum quantity required. When paid by the institution, pricing follows a tiered structure, ranging from $5-$10 per test. Alternatively, students may purchase directly for $15 and their scores will still be reported to their institution via the LTI Client Site.

In what languages is the APPT available?

The APPT is currently available in French and Spanish.
