When it comes to measuring language proficiency, not all tests are created equally. Only ACTFL® assessments, delivered exclusively through Language Testing International® (LTI), produce ACTFL scores and certificates, credentials recognized globally by K-12 programs, universities, employers, and government agencies. Any ACTFL rating provided by a non-ACTFL assessment is not recognized by ACTFL.  In other words, no one else can issue ACTFL scores.

Is “ACTFL-aligned” Enough?

Some test providers administer proficiency tests built on their own scale (or another non-ACTFL scale), and then attempt to correlate or align their scores to ACTFL scores for reporting. While some assessments claim alignment with ACTFL Guidelines, alignment does not mean they are issuing ACTFL scores. There’s no industry recognized and peer-reviewed correlations of non-ACTFL test scores to ACTFL proficiency levels. So, scores from non-ACTFL tests are only approximations and not ACTFL ratings.

To truly know your ACTFL score, assess with ACTFL tests.

Why is this important?

When accuracy, credibility, and reliability matter, “ACTFL-aligned” is not enough. Organizations across Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and higher education rely on ACTFL assessments not just for convenience, but because the results stand up to scrutiny. From minimum proficiency standards to real-world, task-based validation, this is language testing done right. If you’re making hiring, placement, or compliance decisions based on language ability, shortcuts come with real risk.

For credibility, accuracy, and authority in language assessment, there is simply no substitute for ACTFL.

The Gold Standard in Language Assessment

ACTFL assessments are built on decades of research and expertise. Developed by ACTFL with language experts and rated by ACTFL-certified raters, these assessments measure what learners can actually do with language. Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and signing are all evaluated rigorously, so learners, educators, and employers can trust that the results reflect real-world communicative ability.

Only ACTFL assessments deliver true ACTFL scores and certificates. These credentials carry weight because they are:

  • Supported by external research: every score is grounded in research and aligned with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
  • Globally recognized: trusted by higher education institutions, K-12 programs, and employers worldwide.
  • Actionable: scores inform placement, program evaluation, teacher certification, and professional development.

When individuals receive an ACTFL certificate, they receive more than a piece of paper. They receive proof of measurable, demonstrable language ability.

ACTFL: The Authority in Language Proficiency Teaching and Assessment

ACTFL has been a leader in language teaching and assessment for decades, setting the standard for measuring proficiency, reporting, and credentialing. Its Guidelines, research, and scoring frameworks serve as the standard in the field, and many organizations in world language education strive to achieve the same level of credibility and status, building their content, tests, and reporting systems with reference to ACTFL’s work.

ACTFL’s work is rooted in research that has been externally validated. ACTFL’s name stands for rigor, validity, and trust. When an institution, employer, or program sees an ACTFL score, they know it represents a credible, real-world measure of language proficiency, a level of authority and reliability that cannot be replicated by others.

Certified Raters, Consistent Results

One reason ACTFL assessments are unrivaled is the human expertise behind them. Scores are determined by ACTFL-certified raters, who are rigorously trained and calibrated to apply the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines consistently and accurately. These raters ensure that every score on the ACTFL tests set in meaningful, real-world contexts are reliable.

This level of quality control ensures that educators and institutions receive scores and reports they can trust for placement decisions, program evaluation, teacher certifications, or credentialing students for professional and academic advancement.

Beyond the Classroom: Credentials That Open Doors

ACTFL assessments do more than measure language skills; they credential them. Students of any major, from business and healthcare to public service and education, can formally credential their language skills with ACTFL tests and certificates. These credentials demonstrate tangible ability that extends far beyond the language classroom, creating academic, professional, and global opportunities.

Five of ACTFL assessments are also recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education (ACE), allowing students to earn college credit based on their demonstrated proficiency. And with digital badging through Credly, learners can share verified credentials with employers, advisors, and institutions worldwide, making language proficiency a portable, recognizable, career-ready credential.
