Language Proficiency Assessments

Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)

The flagship of ACTFL assessments is the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The ACTFL OPI is an  internationally recognized, valid and reliable assessment of speaking proficiency. The OPI resembles a conversation between two people but in fact follows a standard structure and protocol.  The OPI is a live, 15–30 minute telephonic interview between an ACTFL Certified Tester and a candidate that adapts to the interests, experience and level of the candidate.

The ACTFL OPI is appropriate for a variety of purposes: entrance and exit exams, placement, college credit, program evaluation and performance, teacher credentialing and employment selection. The ACTFL OPI was favorably reviewed and Official OPI ratings are recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education.

Oral Proficiency Interview –  Computer (OPIc)

The ACTFL OPIc is an on-demand, internet- or phone-delivered proficiency test that takes 20-40 minutes to complete. Depending on the test setup (which can vary by client), candidates may take a survey-based or a fixed-form test. If taking a survey-based test, an avatar provides a personalized series of prompts based on the interests and experience of the test taker, as elicited during a survey phase at the beginning of the test. If taking a fixed-form test, an avatar provides a variety of general prompts related to a context area of the client’s choosing (i.e. work, academic, etc.) to each test taker. The test is recorded and assessed by trained, certified ACTFL raters and a score is assigned against either the ACTFL, CEFR, or ILR scale. Because the test can be taken on-demand, it is easy to schedule and cost effective.
